Foundry, est. 2009 or 2010 by Paul Barnes (London) and Christian Schwartz (New York). Their own blurb: Commercial Type is a joint venture between Paul Barnes and Christian Schwartz, who have collaborated since 2004 on various typeface projects, most notably the award winning Guardian Egyptian. The company publishes retail fonts developed by Schwartz and Barnes, their staff, and outside collaborators, and also represents the two when they work together on typedesign projects. Following the redesign of The Guardian, as part of the team headed by Mark Porter, Schwartz and Barnes were awarded the Black Pencil from the D&AD. The team were also nominated for the Design Museum's Designer of the Year prize. In September 2006, Barnes and Schwartz were named two of the 40 most influential designers under 40 in Wallpaper.

In house type designers in 2010: Paul Barnes, Christian Schwartz, Berton Haasebe, and Abi Huynh.

Austin (+Cyrillic): Designed for British style magazine Harper's&Queen, Austin is a loose revival of the typefaces of Richard Austin of the late 18th century for the publisher John Bell. Working as a trade engraver Austin cut the first British modern and later the iconoclastic Scotch Roman. Narrow without being overtly condensed, Austin is a modern with the styling and sheen of New York in the 1970s. Designed by Paul Barnes and Ilya Ruderman from 2007-2009. Has a Cyrillic.

Giorgio (+Sans): Giorgio and its matching sans were designed for Chris Martinez at T, the New York Times Style Magazine, bringing runway proportions to the page in contrasting ways. Designed by Christian Schwartz, 2008-2009.

Graphik: The dominant trend of the mid twentieth century simple sans serifs still reverberates in visual culture. Graphik proves that it is still possible to create something refreshing inspired by this era. Taking cues from the less-known anonymous grotesques and geometric sans serifs, Graphik is perfectly suited for graphic and publication design. Originally designed for the Schwartz's own corporate identity, it was later finished for Condé Nast Portfolio and then expanded for Wallpaper and later T, the New York Times Style Magazine. Designed by Christian Schwartz in 2009.

Guardian (Egyptian Headline, Sans Headline, Egyptian Text, Agate Sans): What happens when you try to make a new sans serif by chopping the slabs off of an Egyptian? That was the original inspiration behind this modern classic designed for Mark Porter and the Guardian newspaper. Comprised of several interrelated families: Sans and Egyptian for headlines; a Text Egyptian; and an Agate Sans, every possible typographic need of a daily paper is fulfilled. Serious news headlines, expressive features, readable text, tiny financial listings, info graphics, and everything in between can be capably handled with ease. Designed by Paul Barnes and Christian Schwartz, 2009.

Lyon Text: Begun as Kai Bernau's degree project on the Type + Media course at the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) in The Hague, Bernau extensively revised the typeface in time for its debut in the New York Times Magazine in 2009. Like many of the great seriffed typefaces it draws intelligently from the work of Robert Granjon, the master of the Renaissance, while having a contemporary feel. Its elegant looks, are matched with an intelligent, anonymous nature, making it excellent for magazines, book and newspapers. Designed by Kai Bernau, 2009.
Neue Haas Grotesk (2011).

Stag (+Sans, Dot, Stencil, Sans Round): Stag started as a small family of slab serifs commissioned for headlines by the US edition of Esquire magazine and eventually grew into a sprawling multi-part family including a flexible sans companion and two additional display variants that are probably best described as special effects. Designed by Christian Schwartz, Berton Hasebe and Ross Milne, 2008, 2009.

Kaiser, a condensed sans serif in 3 widths designed by Vincent Chan, is used for display and is the primary typeface on the cover. Inspired by 1920s and 30s-era German display typefaces, it is characterized by tight and regular spacing, and by a highly simplified lowercase. The bracketed serifs & ball terminals of the traditional Clarendon, also known as Ionic, first emerged in Britain in the middle of the 19th century. Combining these structures with a contemporary interpretation of Antique Olive seems counterintutive, but this unexpected marriage feels natural. Mark Porter and Simon Esterson provided a much needed deadline for their 2013 redesign of the Neue Züricher Zeitung am Sonntag. As the Ionic genre has traditionally been popular for newspapers, Duplicate Ionic is a natural choice for long texts, though its appealing personality suits display use as well. The romans are a collaboration between Christian Schwartz and Miguel Reyes, but the italic is fully Reyes’s creation, departing fully from the sloped romans seen in Duplicate Sans and Slab with a true cursive lowercase.

Most contemporary revivals of Giambattista Bodoni’s work have focused almost entirely on the elegant, high-contrast types that he cut in the early part of the nineteenth century. Caponi, named for the late Amid Capeci, who commissioned it for his twentieth anniversary revamp of Entertainment Weekly, expands the notion of what Bodoni’s work was. It draws a bit on his later work, but takes as its primary reference the typefaces he cut during the early years of his career, when he had been greatly influenced by the Rococco style of the French printer and punchcutter Pierre Simon Fournier. The three families of Caponi each play a different role while complementing each other. Caponi Display is a traditional Modern with relatively high contrast, ideal for headline typography. Caponi Slab is low contrast throughout, culminating in a punchy Black weight, useful for large and expressive display typography, while also being robust enough for subheads, pull quotes, and other small display uses. Caponi Text is a more faithful interpretation of Bodoni’s early work, capturing the unexpected warmth of his romans and the quirks of the italics, with mismatched terminal shapes and subtly varying serifs.

Publico Banner was initially designed to meet the needs of magazine designers who found that Publico Headline was not quite sharp enough for enormous display type. Publico Banner offered its designers an opportunity to indulge their love of high-contrast, large x-height, very tightly spaced late 1970s display type. The Ultra weight, in particular, is a loving homage to Tony Stan, Ed Benguiat, Tom Carnase, and others from their generation of American lettering artists and type designers. This family was first seen in 2011 in Dagens Nyheter, Sweden's largest-circulation morning newspaper, and in Mark Porter's 2012 refresh of Portuguese daily Público.

Canela is a graceful display typeface that defies many of the traditional classifications. Designed by Miguel Reyes, its forms are in an ambiguous space between sans and serif, both soft and sharp, modern yet with roots in the classical. Canela began as an interpretation of Caslon, but Reyes gradually took the family in a new and unexpected direction, shedding its serifs and leaving only vestigial flaring at the ends of strokes, taking on on a monumental quality influenced by his experience with stonecarving. Canela debuted in issue 5 of fashion and art magazine Document Journal, where its sober elegance complemented a melancholic moment in fashion. Delicate in its lightest form, with its gently flared strokes, as the weight increases to the blackest weights it takes on entirely different feeling of warmth with a quiet confidence.

Dala Floda has its roots in the typefaces of the Renaissance but adds the twist of being a stencil letterform. Originally inspired by worn gravestone lettering and lettering on shipping crates, the elegance of the forms belies their everyday origins. First designed in 1997 for a logo, Dala Floda eventually became the headline typeface for the art magazine frieze in 2005. Since then the family has grown considerably, with the addition of an italic and a range of heavier weights, all the way up to a Fat. Its stencil form makes it very distinctive for headline use and especially well suited for logotypes.

Dala Moa is a sans serif stencil typeface for display, sharing the proportions of its cousin Dala Floda. It takes the same inspiration – the erosion of letters on stones – but takes the idea one stage further with the removal of serifs, revealing basic structures. The forms and proportions of the romans come directly from Dala Floda, while the italic diverges into the upright humanist tradition. The lighter weights show the influence Jan Tschichold’s stencil experiments of the 1930s, and in particular his lesser-known display face Saskia released by Schelter & Giesecke.

Dala Prisma is a development of the stencil typeface Dala Floda, replacing the solid forms with a series of stripes which vary in width, offering a wonderful optical effect. The variation between thick and thin is exaggerated with multiple lines, which increase in number as the typefaces becomes bolder. With both roman and italic variants, and featuring the same set of typographic features such as fractions, small caps, and swashes as the original Dala Floda family, Dala Prisma is a uniquely powerful display typeface. The extreme thinning of lines means this family only works at large display sizes.

Initially designed for British fashion magazine Harper’s & Queen, Austin is a loose revival of the typefaces cut by Richard Austin for trade published John Bell in the late 18th century. Referencing Austin’s text types, Paul Barnes designed a display face with all of the hallmarks of a ‘fashion’ type: high contrast, tight spacing, and beautifully nuanced curves. Later additions to the family expanded its usability to the largest sizes, with the elegant Austin Hairline weights, a the wider and more robust Austin Text, and four-style News. Also new is a Latin+Cyrillic family.

Produkt is the slab serif version of the sans Graphik family. Its serifs are relatively short, particularly in the heaviest weights, so it retains the compact proportions and regular texture that characterize Graphik.
