Dr. Friedrich P.J. Diecke and Dr. Elliott M. Kanner also provided invaluable editorial assistance.
Dr Diecke, who was formerly Professor and Chairman of the Department of Physiology, UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School, is a Professor Emeritus at that institution.
His research has concentrated on membrane transport mechanisms in lens epithelial cells, corneal endothelial cells and peripheral nerve and on the regulation of vascular smooth muscle contraction.
Dr. Elliott M. Kanner was born in Canada in 1970. He graduated from Yale University in 1992 with a BS/MS degree in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry.
He received his PhD degree from the Rockefeller University in 1999 and his MD degree from Weill/Cornell in 2001. He is currently an Ophthalmology resident at Columbia University.

He is a member of the Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis; member of the International Council of ophthalmology; member of the International Ophthalmic Advisory Board, Lions Eye Institute, Perth, etc.

Professor Ian Constable is an internationally renowned ophthalmic surgeon with a distinguished record of eye research and development in many areas. He was appointed Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Western Australia in 1975 and established the Lions Eye Institute in 1983 and since has acted as Director. He founded Q-Vis in 1997 and performed the first excimer (gas) laser treatments carried out in Australia in 1991.

This book is a snap shot in time. In it the contributors have attempted to describe some of the parameters influencing drug delivery and some of the attempts made, with varying degrees of success, to achieve therapeutic drug concentrations in the posterior of the eye. Also described are disease states of the back of the eye, some of which, like wet age-related macular degeneration, affect many people. Following the approval of Visudyne and Macugen, one could expect rapid changes in clinical management of these diseases. Other conditions, like retinitis pigmentosa, are very slowly progressing (making the design of clinical trials extremely difficult) or else affect only a small number of people, such as proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR). For these conditions there is as yet no precedent with the FDA for what constitutes an approvable drug. Progress in the management of such conditions is unfortunately
likely to be much slower

Рецензия: Микроскопия живого глава, или биомикроскопия, является чрезвычайно тонким и довольно точным методом исследования, который открывает широкие возможности изучения физиологии и патологии органа зрения. При помощи биомикроскопии возможно исследование нормальных тканевых структур функционирующего глаза, наблюдение мельчайших изменений в нем.
Метод биомикроскопии необходим для постановки раннего диагноза целого ряда глазных заболеваний и проведения дифференциальной диагностики. Микроскопия живого глаза позволяет наблюдать динамику патологического процесса и своевременно ориентироваться в выборе метода лечения, а иногда в выборе вида оперативного вмешательства с последующей оценкой результатов произведенной операции. Пользуясь биомикроскопией, можно уже в ранние сроки наблюдения за больным судить о прогнозе заболевания.
Данная монография будет способствовать более быстрому повышению квалификации офтальмологов нашей страны, повышению качества их диагностической, лечебной и профилактической работы.

Давно установлено, что при ряде заболеваний придаточных пазух носа в патологический процесс вовлекается и глазница. Поэтому знакомство с проявлениями и течением таких заболеваний орбито-синуальной области имеет большое значение как для ринолога, так и для офталмолога, поскольку глазные симптомы (например, экзофталм) могут быть первыми и ранними проявлениями этих заболеваний.
Однако до настоящего времени необходимость комплексной работы представителей пограничных дисциплин не стала общепризнанной и не реализована в широкой практике.
Ринологи и офталмологи большей частью работают изолированно и сравнительно мало знакомы с симптоматикой заболеваний смежных областей, что неблагоприятно отражается на своевременном установлении диагноза и на эффективности лечения.
При заболеваниях глазницы и смежных с ней придаточных пазух носа большое значение приобрел метод рентгенологического исследования, без которого в настоящее время не дается заключения о том или другом заболевании орбито-синуальной области. Только после изучения рентгенограмм удается установить действительную природу заболевания и назначить правильное лечение.
На примере такого заболевания, как мукоцеле, можно убедиться в справедливости сказанного. Кистевидное растяжение придаточных пазух носа, являясь чисто ринологическим заболеванием, часто протекает с офталмологической симптоматикой и распознается в большинстве случаев после рентгенологического исследования.
Но к такому методу диагностики офталмологи прибегают недостаточно, а в случаях проведения исследования оценка рентгенологических данных и правильная расшифровка рентгеновской картины, как это видно из приводимых в книге примеров, не стоят на должной высоте.
Необходимость комплексной работы врачей пограничных специальностей особенно выявилась в период Великой Отечественной войны, когда нередко встречались комбинированные травмы.
Книга преследует основную задачу - ознакомить читателей, в первую очередь оториноларингологов и офталмологов, с клиническими проявлениями, методами распознавания, с принципами консервативного лечения, а также с техникой оперативных вмешательств при тех патологических состояниях придаточных Пазух носа (эмпиемы и невоспалительные процессы, опухоли и т. п.), которые часто приводят к поражению орбиты и ее содержимого.
Наряду с изложением классических способов оперативного лечения придаточных пазух носа и орбиты, приводится также описание комбинированных операций орбито-синуальной области, в разработке которых (методик) отечественным ученым (В. И. Воячек, В. П. Филатов и Н. К. Лысенков, С. С. Головин и др.) принадлежит исключительная роль.
В основу книги положены текущий и архивный материал Государственного научно-исследовательского института глазных болезней имени Гельмгольца, наблюдения клиники болезней уха, горла и носа педиатрического факультета II Московского медицинского института имени И. В. Сталина (на базе больницы имени Н. Ф. Филатова), а также личный опыт авторов.
