Letters, art, and design run in James Puckett’s family. James’ great-
grandmother was a librarian and a painter. Her old books instilled James
with a love of nineteenth and early-twentieth century American
typography. His grandfather and great-grandfather were an engineers
and stationery engravers. James still uses his grandfather’s drafting
calipers to measure letters.

James’ first significant experience with lettering was being assigned to
detention in first grade when he insisted on writing the letter a with
two-stories. Such incidents continued when his tendency to write cursive
in an old French style annoyed his almost illiterate public schoolteachers
who could not recognize a—somewhat bastardized—Civilité. He was
granted a brief respite when he was introduced to beziér drawing and
Leroy lettering in high-school drafting classes.

James studied graphic design at the Corcoran College of Art and Design
in Washington, DC. He developed a love of typography at the Corcoran
and wrote a thesis about the development of versatile typefaces as
branding devices. James’ thesis was accompanied by James’ second
type design project. After graduating with honors James decided to
pursue type design full-time. In 2009 he started Dunwich Type Founders
in New York City.

In addition to his type design James teaches typography and graphic
design at Fordham University and the City College of New York. He also
writes reviews of books about graphic design and design history.

Typefaces:

Armitage (2010). A grotesque sans family.
The squarish signpainting family Downturn (2009).
He is working on a (nice!) revival of Fry's Baskerville, which is based on a scan of types cut in 1768 by Isaac Moore.
Lorimer (2011) is a gothic sans serif that was inspired by 19th century inscriptions in the yard of New York's St. Mark's Church. Some weights are free. In 2011, this was followed by Lorimer No. 2 and Lorimer No. 2 Condensed. In 2012, there was an announcement that Lorimer was no longer being distributed.
New Constructivist Beta (2007).
Recovery (2008, TypeTrust). The grunge version of Recovery is Black Monday (2009, with Silas Dilworth): it has several glyphs for randomization.
The 1829 specimen book of Alonzo W. Kinsley's Franklin Letter Foundry led James Puckett to develop the splendid ornamental didone fat face Sybarite (2011), which comes in many optical weights.
